UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urges African leaders to respect gay and lesbian rights.
It is during the opening of a meeting of the United Nations that Ban said:
"One form of discrimination ignored or even sanctioned by many states for too long has been discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity."
"It prompted governments to treat people as second class citizens or even criminals."
It is known, in certain African countries, homosexuality is still illegal. Following a meeting of the Commonwealth chiefs, several African presidents had said they will change their laws. Currently, only words, we are waiting for acts and as Ban said, "confronting these discriminations is a challenge, but we must not give up on the ideas of the universal declaration" of human rights."
