It is while discussing the film "Paint it Black" in which she plays the role of Josie that Shawkat mentioned the fact that she was bisexual.
She says that one day her mother asked her if she preferred girls or boys and she replied that she did not know yet. Later she understood that she was bisexual in particular by mixing with many gay artists in Los Angeles.
"I was a tomboy growing up, and I remember my mom asking me when I was 10, 'Are you attracted to boys or girls?' I said I don’t know. Now I consider myself bisexual, and I think balancing my male and female energies has been a big part of me growing as an actor," she said.
