So this Equality Act would include protections for LGBTQ people in the federal laws. It would provide protection in important areas: housing, education, access to public spaces, employment, accommodations, jury service and federally-funded programs.
It would strengthen the civil rights act of 1964 by including protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
It had already been introduced when Barack Obama was president. Even though it is a bipartisan act and has the support of 240 congress members, it won't be easy to get its approval, especially in the Senate and the House where many Republicans oppose it.
