Andrew Barr Became The First Openly Gay Chief Minister Of A Government In Australia

Andrew Barr, a member of the Labor Party, has been appointed Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory Canberra.

In his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to his partner and said he would like to legally marry in Australia.

“Anthony, I love you,” the new Chief Minister said.

“I look forward to the day we can legally marry in this country,” he said.

A marriage equality bill was rejected in 2012. Only Canberra, with its own laws, approved the equal marriage before the law is prohibited again by the High Court, considering that the federal law prevails.

Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm introduced to the Senate a marriage equality bill last month.
