Angélica Lozano Is The First Lesbian Elected To The Colombian Congress

Written by

Angelica Lozano

For the first time in Colombia and even in all South America, a lesbian was elected to the Congress.

Angélica Lozano was until now a councilwoman in Bogota, the capital of Colombia. Representing the Green Alliance Party, she was elected with more than 30.000 votes to the Congress.

There is no law allowing marriage equality in Colombia. However, in 2011, the Constitutional Court of the country ruled that if there were no law bringing the same rights to same-sex couples and to straight couples before June 2013, then LGBT couples could despite everything legally register their relationships. A bill had come out but this one was rejected by the Senate last April.
