Brazil Top Catholic Bishop Leonardo Steiner Supports Same-Sex Unions

Bishop Leonardo Steiner

Whereas Brazil is pride of place with the soccer world cup, one of the most important catholic bishops of the country has just shown his support in favour of unions between the same-sex people.

Brazil legalized the equal marriage in May 2013 following a court's decision, but this country, which, as reports Ninemsn, is the home to the world's largest Catholic population, truly did not explode of joy to the announcement of this change.

Moreover, in spite of the repeal, there does not exist a marriage equality law, just a possibility of marrying following a legal decision.

In an interview with the O Globo newspaper, Leonardo Steiner, the secretary general of the National Confederation of Brazilian Bishops, thus said:

"There needs to be a dialog on the rights attached to shared life between people of the same sex who decide to live together. They need legal support from society.

"The Church isn't the same through the ages. It seeks answers for the present time, using the Gospel as the illuminating force of its action.

"The Church is always seeking to read the signs of the times, to see what must or must not change. The truths of faith don't change."
