Since yesterday, the penal code of Brunei, which is a small country of Southeast Asia, sentences the same-sex relationships to death by stoning.

The capital punishment had been stopped in 1957 but make its return this year with this law. It is at the same time an anti-gay law but also a law which punishes rapes, murders, blasphemies, …

Rupert Colville, spokesperson of the High Commission for the human rights of the United Nations, expressed his concern and recalled that "the application of the capital punishment for such a broad variety of infringements goes against the international law."

It also indicated that "in international law, stoning is regarded as torture or as any other sorrow and inhuman treatments and degrading, and remains consequently prohibited."

At present, the same-sex relationships are sentenced by capital punishment in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Yemen, Sudan, Mauritania and from now on in Brunei.
