Chile Legalizes Civil Unions For Same-Sex Couples

Chile has long been regarded as the most conservative countries in South America, yet President Michelle Bachelet signed a law allowing civil unions for same-sex couples.

It's been four years since the Chilean LGBT community is fighting for recognition of their unions and this is now done!

«This ends the monopoly of having to recognize unions, families, as just within marriage,» said Rolando Jimenez, president of the Gay Liberation and Integration Movement. «This is very good news for Chile.»

The law, which takes effect in six months, grants many rights only married couples previously enjoyed. It allows better performance in health, retirement, or inheritance, for example, in addition to the recognition of the couple.

The president had earlier promised that if she was re-elected, she would sign the bill into law if it happened to her desk. After the signing, she said:

«Today we're advancing as a society.

«We're taking a fundamental step on this road of rights, justice and respect for individual liberties.»
