Colombia Allows The Adoption By The Partner Of The Biological Parent

While last week it was discovered that two lesbian ministers in the Colombian government are dating, Colombia has also taken a major step for LGBT rights since the adoption of a child by the partner of the biological parent was given to same-sex couples!

The Constitutional Court gives the right for gays and lesbians to adopt the biological child of their partner.

"The court considered that the discriminatory criterion the administrative authority had used to deny the adoption procedure ... was unacceptable in this case, which involves a consensual adoption in which the biological father or mother consents to an adoption by his or her permanent partner," magistrate Luis Ernesto Vargas said.

But the classic adoption without biological connection is still not possible. However, as reported Aljazeera, legal experts said it could indicate a willingness by the high court to extend adoption rights to all same-sex couples, and sets a precedent for all similar cases in the South American country.
