Following the decision of Federal Judge Frances M. Tydingco-Gatewood to regard the equal marriage ban as unconstitutional, marriages between same-sex people are now recognized in Guam. This decision immediately takes effect and couples can now apply for marriage licenses.
All this would not have been possible without the challenge of Loretta M. Pangelinan and Kathleen M. Aguero in April.
«We are delighted with the news,» Aguero said in a news release. «Actually, we've been waiting for nearly eight years to marry. We're so happy that the time has finally come.»
Guam Archbishop Anthony Apuron said in a statement that the change «is not only a defeat for Christian principles, but a defeat for our island and the whole of humanity.»
