Shibuya, A District Of Tokyo, Will Recognize Same-Sex Relationships

Written by

Again a district of Tokyo will recognize the relationships of same-sex couples in the form of partnerships certificates.

Last year, for the first time, Setagaya, another district of Tokyo, had recognized same-sex couples despite the lack of law in favor of LGBT Japanese.

Japan banned the legal recognition of same-sex unions because marriage is defined as being «a mutual consent of parties from both sexes.»

Shibuya will therefore also allow this recognition. The mayor said that the decision of Setagaya authorities prompted him to make that decision for his own district.
