Tanzania strengthens its repression on LGBT people. It has arrested more than a dozen people who allegedly promoted homosexuality. People with HIV are also at risk.

Things are degenerating for the Tanzanian LGBT community. The police arrested about 10 people working for the NGO Community Health Services and Advocacy (CHESA). The local police chief, Lazaro Mambosasa, said their arrest is due to their "promotion of homosexuality": "Tanzanian law forbids this act between people of the same-sex, it is a violation of our country’s laws."

The NGO denied. In fact, it seems like they were there to talk about HIV.

Since the government suspended the activity of CHESA. In a statement, the NGO said they would challenge the decision in court.

The government refused the bail application. In this African country same-sex relationships are punishable by life imprisonment, the minimum sentence is 30 years.

The Penal Code also criminalizes any "carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature." (understand homosexuality).

Beyond the LGBT aspect, Tanzania has also closed health centers that provide services for people with HIV. The government said that these services were only for gay people, which is wrong.

33,000 people died of the disease last year and there are 1.4 million people living with HIV in the country.

This government which is launching a campaign of repression against LGBT people, especially LGBT rights defenders, is a source of additional concern ...
