The Alberta Conservative Government Will Allow Gay-Straight Alliances In Schools

Written by

Education Minister Gordon Dirks

The Conservative government of the Province of Alberta, Canada will make straight-gay alliances possible in schools funded by the state.

The Education Minister Gordon Dirks has introduced an amendment to a bill that will allow a gay-straight alliance if students request it.

«Some of those moments were very moving moments as you heard students telling their stories of being bullied, discriminated against, feeling suicidal, even attempting [it].

«I remember one conversation with a student talking about how they had attempted suicide so when that happens and you have those kinds of intimate, frank conversations with students, it goes from your head to your heart,» Dicks said.

This is good news, of course, but it's quite surprising from this government, which, on several occasions, blocked the creation of LGBT groups in schools and which, last year, voted squarely against a similar bill.
