The Largest Civil Same-Sex Wedding Ceremony Was Held In Rio De Janeiro

Written by

Although Brazil has not legalized marriage equality, 160 couples were married this Sunday in Rio de Janeiro.

As part of the "Without Homophobia" program, the largest civil same-sex wedding ceremony took place this weekend in the city.

In 2011, a court granted the same rights to LGBT couples in a civil union as married heterosexual couples on a request for recognition of same-sex couples filed by the government of Rio de Janeiro.

"This time we go further with this civil same-sex wedding ceremony, which is the largest in the world," said Claudio Nascimento, head of the "Without Homophobia" program.

Rio de Janeiro already organized five ceremonies of this kind in the city.
