Two Victorian Lesbians Do Not Get The Right To Be Registered Both As Mothers Of Their Child

Written by

A Victorian lesbian couple tried to register their names as parents of their daughter, born through donated sperm, without success.

Indeed, Tamara and Linda Arc-Dekker would have liked to appear both on their daughter's birth certificate, but the Registrar of Birth, Deaths and Marriages had refused to register their names.

They had filed a complaint to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The judge has refused their request. Only Tamara can be registered as the mother as she gave birth to the child. Linda can only be listed in the "parents" column.

As so aptly remarked Sean Mulcahy, Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby co-convenor, laws should be amended to permit the recognition of two mothers or two fathers of a child.
