Zimbabwe: Mugabe has gone but another anti-LGBT president has replaced him

Written by

Mnangagwa Mugabe

The resignation of President Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe could have been good news. Imagine 30 years of Donald Trump. But his replacement doesn't seem very open about LGBTQ rights.

We know Robert Mugabe (pictured on the right) for his despicable sentences and his policy of repression against the LGBT community. You know he has extorted, arrested and tortured many gay women and men. He has always regarded homosexuality as a filthy disease.

Now a new government is leading the country. But who's Zimbabwe's new president Emmerson Mnangagwa (pictured on the left)? What's his opinion on the LGBT community?

While Mnangagwa was Mugabe's former vice-president, he has already spoken out against homosexuality. During meetings at the United Nations, he shared his wish that homosexuality remains illegal.

He had insisted that there would be no "'new rights' that are contrary to our norms, values, traditions and beliefs." As usual, understand he's talking about same-sex relationships.

After President Mugabe here is President Mnangagwa. Hard to be optimistic. Sorry for you who's in Africa, I only post bad news for a few days.
