The creators of the book "Maiden Voyage", which focuses on two female queer characters, have launched a fundraising campaign. They stress the importance of LGBT visibility in children's books. Through the story of Ru and Freya, they hope that LGBT children will understand that they are also part of this world.

"Visibility in media is a powerful way to show our young people they belong; if we don’t see ourselves in stories, we don’t see ourselves in the world," Adam Reynolds and Chaz Harris, the founders of Promised Land Tales and the co-writers of "Maiden Voyage", highlight the importance of LGBT stories in children's books.

"We believe everyone deserves to live happily ever after and so we set out to tell more stories to prove that in our universe ― where all are equal no matter their gender, who they love or what they look like."

Harris added: “I believe that lack of visibility creates the kind of ‘otherness’ we often experience as LGBTQ+ people.

“If we can be heroes in stories, we’re seen more positively in the real world.”

"Maiden Voyage" is a book for children from five to 10 years old. It tells the story of a fisherman's daughter, Ru, who inherits a treasure map and goes out looking for it. During this epic, she meets a boat captain, Freya. The two women team up to try to find the treasure.

This book features not only queer women but also strong women.

“Girls should grow up knowing they can be a powerful queen, a brave sea captain or anything else they set their minds to,” Reynolds and Harris said.

This is not their first children's book with LGBT characters since they had released "Promised Land" which tells the love story of a farm boy and a prince.
