A Labor MP To Ask The Northern Ireland Assembly To Grant A Referendum On Equal Marriage

Labor Member of Parliament Ivan Lewis will require a public vote on the equal marriage.

As in Ireland, which recently legalized marriage for LGBT couples by referendum, Lewis hopes to get the Assembly to grant the vote.

«Ideally, there would be sufficient support in the Northern Ireland assembly to introduce legislation for same-sex marriage,» Lewis told The Guardian. «This is currently not the case as as in the Republic of Ireland I would propose a referendum be held which allows the people to decide.»

Northern Ireland is so far the only country of the United Kingdom that has not legalized marriage equality.

A first attempt was defeated in April. 47 members in favor of the law against 49.

Evangelical Christian groups are tremendously pushing to no marriage equality law is adopted.
