A lesbian couple launched the very first legal battle to recognize LGBT marriages in Bulgaria.

Lilia Babulkova and her wife have lodged a complaint against Sofia municipality, the capital of Bulgaria where they live.

The couple married in the United Kingdom in 2017. When they wished to change their marital status on their identity cards, the municipality refused because the Bulgarian constitution prohibits marriage equality. The couple decided to sue the municipality.

“We do not want to provoke anyone, nor do we like it, we just want to have our place that is not swept under the carpet,” Babulkova told NovaTV.
