Attorney General Wants No Change To Northern Ireland Adoption Law

Attorney General John Larkin thinks the prohibition of adoption for gay and lesbian couples should remain in Northern Ireland for the protection of the children.

For Larkin, adoption laws were to ensure child welfare rather than satisfy the wishes of would-be parents as reports the BBC.

Following the request of a lesbian couple who would want to adopt a child together, adoption by gay and lesbian couples is studied in Northern Ireland.

The defenders of this couple indicated that on several occasions, some unmarried couples obtained the right to adopt whereas the Civil Partnership Act allows neither gay and lesbian couples nor unmarried couples to be able to adopt.

Hearings currently continue so to be continued.
