European Parliament Adopts Legislation To Allow Better Recognition Of LGBTQ Parents And Their Children

European Parliament

By a 533-41 vote, the European Parliament has just approved an "automatic cross-border recognition of domestic adoption orders" across the EU, including adoptions made by same-sex parents.

This legislation will make it possible to tackle the problems caused by different laws from one country to another within the European Union, in particular for parents who move to a new country and who may lose their parental authority or the recognition of their family .

The report, which followed up on this legislation, states that it is important to include non-discrimination in the right to adopt in order to protect all families.

"Today the European Parliament made clear that a family does not cease to be a family, simply by crossing a border," Malin Bjork MEP, Vice-President of the Intergroup on LGBTI Rights.

"The broad support that this report received has given the Commission a clear mandate to ensure full freedom of movement, including for LGBTI families!"
