German Court Allows Partner To Adopt Child

Written by

In Germany, same-sex couples cannot adopt yet but a small advance nevertheless happened.

The Constitutional Court of Karlsruhe indeed decided to allow a person to adopt the children of her partner (biological or adopted children). It is thus a first step towards a recognition of LGBT families since before, only straight families could reach this right.

"Finally the adopted children living in LGBT families have the same rights that those of straight families," said a representative of the Homosexuals and Lesbians Federation in an official statement.

However, adoption by a same-sex couple is always prohibited. It is a little bit twisted if one thinks about it: a lesbian can adopt a child, whom her partner will be able to then also adopt, but both cannot adopt the child together.
