Madrid to become a very gay-friendly city in anticipation of the World Pride 2017

Written by

The Madrid Assembly has unanimously approved a proposal to make the Spanish capital a gay-friendly region.

Before the World Pride 2017, Madrid wants to review its legislation but also promote respect and tolerance towards LGBT people.

The purpose of the approved measure is to transform the city to be "open, friendly and tolerant with LGBT people". It also invites institutions to take part in the organization and hosting of the World Pride 2017.

The initiatives already planned are:

  • an LGBT flag hoisted at the seat of the regional government
  • an awareness campaign against anti-LGBT attacks with posters in public spaces
  • the participation of sports clubs and federations in combating discrimination in sport

In 2002, Madrid set up an information, support and awareness service for LGBT people and their families.

The city has recently started to combat discrimination at work with administrative penalties for people with discriminatory behavior.

Finally, in July 2016, Madrid approved a measure of protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity as well as teaching sexual diversity in schools and high schools.
