Malta President George Abela Won't Sign The Civil Union Bill Into Law

Written by

George Abela

The current President of Malta George Abela will not sign the bill legalizing the civil unions into law. No problem, his mandate stops on April 4th and his successor, Marie-Louise Coleiro, already announced that she would do it.

It will have still to be waited a few days so that the civil unions are accessible to LGBT people from Malta.

The future president Coleiro had indeed said a few weeks ago that she would sign the law as she had undertaken during her campaign.

"I was part of the Cabinet that approved that Bill and I know that it was an electoral commitment made by this government prior to the election so I will have no problem signing the Bill," she told the Times.

This civil union law will allow the same-sex couples to obtain the same rights as the married couples.
