Malta's President Coleiro Preca Said She Will Sign The Civil Unions And Adoption Bill

Written by

Still a few hours ago, we wondered whether the President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, just elected in Malta, were going or not to sign the bill allowing the opening of civil unions and adoption to same-sex couples.

President George Abela’s tenure comes to an end on 4 April. As a result, it is the President Coleiro Preca who have to make the final decision concerning the civil unions and adoption law. Doubts remain because, in 2013, she had been strongly opposed to divorce.

But this morning, the President Colerio Preca said in an interview with The Times of Malta that she would sign the law without problem.

"I was part of the Cabinet that approved that Bill and I know that it was an electoral commitment made by this government prior to the election so I will have no problem signing the Bill," she said.
