Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg Supports Church Same-Sex Wedding

Written by

Erna Solberg

The Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg announced her support for a church wedding for the same-sex couples.

Norway legalized marriage equality and adoption in 2009 but only the civil wedding is granted to the same-sex people.

The church of Norway recently decided to reject a religious marriage equality although almost all the bishops are in its favour (8 out of 12).

Unfortunately, it is not them who decide but the synod, the highest decision-making body in the church, whose representatives rejected the proposition by a 64-51 vote.

A few days ago, Prime Minister Solberg, who is also the leader of the conservative party of Norway, stated to believe that the celebrations of same-sex marriage should be possible in the churches, even if she respects the decision of the church of Norway.

"Personally, I believe that gays should be allowed to marry in church," Solberg said.

"This is the way I, as a church member, want the church to go," she added.

"We separated the church and the state, and thus I must respect that it is the church which makes these decisions."
