Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino Recognized The Marriage Of 16 Same-Sex Couples

The Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino decided to recognize the unions of 16 same-sex couples although Italy does not recognize marriage equality.

These 16 couples were married outside of the country but the equal marriage is illegal in Italy.

Increasingly Italian cities recognize marriage equality which allows couples to enjoy better health benefits, insurance, pensions and inheritance, but even if 85% of the population supported the recognition of civil unions, only a quarter supports the equal marriage.
