The most powerful church of Russia, i.e. the Orthodox Church, proposed a referendum on the same-sex relationships ban.

"There is no question that society should discuss this issue since we live in a democracy," Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin told the Izvestia daily.

"For this reason, it is precisely the majority of our people and not some outside powers that should decide what should be a criminal offence and what should not," he said.

Winter Olympics are about to start in Sochi, the church wants to have a clear conscience.

By allowing a referendum, which in all the manners will be negative for the LGBT community, it wants to justify the vote of anti-gay laws by getting the approval from the population.
