The Episcopal Church will allow same-sex couples to marry within the church.

The Synod has spoken for the opening of the Episcopal Church on equal marriage.

There will be no obligation for the bishops of the Episcopal Church to celebrate same-sex unions if they do not wish to do so.

The equality campaign group Stonewall Scotland welcomed this vote.

"This step allows couples to celebrate their love within their faith and sends a really positive message to other LGBT people, both here and around the world," the group's director Colin Macfarlane told the BBCBBC.

"It signals that members of the church welcome, recognize and respect LGBT people as part of the faith community."
