Is it Possible to Love More than One Woman at a Time?

Written by

Dear Sappho,

Do you think it is possible to love more than one person at the same time? Is it moral or reasonable to feel that way? I am not talking about merely lust and besides I have lots of self-control. Sometimes I even confuse myself with my feelings and yet my feelings seem to be real. Do you think I should work on controlling my feelings more so I can eliminate or change this feeling or just let myself feel whatever I feel and be all right with it, I don't want to hurt anyone - including myself.

Dear Confused,

Are you asking me if you should limit your feelings of love? I think not! Love has infinite capacity to exist and knows no bounds except the limitations we place on it. Love is as ubiquitous as the air we breathe and stars in the skies. To clarify, are we talking about love, or infatuation? Infatuation is a prelude to love. I believe love is always a wise choice and advise you not to second guess yourself and limit your ability to feel love freely. Why rob yourself of one of life’s greatest pleasures. Praise Aphrodite and be grateful for your ability to feel that most elusive and sought after emotion. But please don’t forget to love yourself as much as you love others.

PS: Here’s what a few other others have to say;

No one can understand love who has not experienced infatuation. And no one can understand infatuation, no matter how many times she has experienced it. We choose those we like; with those we love, we have no say in the matter. ~Mignon McLaughlin

Nobody has ever measured, even poets, how much love a heart can hold. ~Zelda Fitzgerald

The eskimos had fifty-two names for snow because it was important to them: there ought to be as many for love. ~Margaret Atwood

Love is the poetry of the senses. ~Honoré de Balzac

The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread. ~Mother Teresa

Love withers under constraints: its very essence is liberty: it is compatible neither with obedience, jealousy, nor fear: it is there most pure, perfect, and unlimited where its votaries live in confidence, equality and unreserve. ~Percy Bysshe Shelley

Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law. ~Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy, A.D. 524

Think not that you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy directs your course. Kahill Gibran
