A Record Number Of LGBTQI Athletes Participating In Rio Olympics

The Olympics, which take place from August 5 to 21, 2016 in Rio, Brazil welcome 46 LGBTQI athletes and three coaches. This is a record. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012, 23 LGBT athletes were competing.

Here is the list of female athletes participating in these games:

United States:

Basketball: Seimone Augustus, Brittney Griner and Angel McCoughtry (picture 1) push through in their group, they have dominated the Spanish team in particular.

Rugby: Kelly Griffin participated in her first Olympics with Jillion Potter. They end the fifth.

Whitewater kayak slalom: Ashley Nee

Soccer: Megan Rapinoe, Jill Ellis (head coach) who have made a good start.

India:

Athletics: Dutee Chand (picture 2), who recently won the right to continue competing among women, which was an important victory for intersex athletes.

The Netherlands:

Field hockey: Carlien Dirkse van den Heuvel, Maartje Paumen, Alyson Annan (coach)

Sweden:

Soccer: Lisa Karolina, Viktoria Dahlkvist, Åsa Maria Nilla Fischer, Hedvig Lindahl, Carolina Seger, Pia Sundhage (head coach)

South Africa:

Track & field: Caster Semenya

Javelin: Sunette Viljoen Stella

New Zealand:

Soccer: Katie Duncan

Brazil:

Beach volleyball: Larissa França will need support. Playing at home brings a lot of pressure.

Handball: Mayssa Pessoa

Taekwondo: Julia Vasconcelos

Australia:

Soccer: Michelle Pearl Heyman

France:

Swimming: Melanie Hénique proudly represent France and the community. One year ago she suffered a very violent homophobic attack which had led her to the hospital. On August 12, she will try to qualify in the 50m freestyle.

Handball: Alexandra Lacrabère (picture 3) and France handball team lost against Russia in a close game, they are inclined to a point but we know they will pull themselves together.

Canada:

Soccer: Marie-Eve Nault

Germany:

Discus: Nadine Müller

Pole vault: Martina Strutz

Britain:

Field hockey: Susannah Townsend, Helen Richardson-Walsh and her wife Kate Walsh Richardson
