We have discovered Nia Nal aka Dreamer in the CW series “Supergirl” in late 2018. And this new character further improves the visibility of our community on TV.
Nia is a young journalist who works for the main role, Kara Danvers aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist).
Executive Producer Jessica Queller explained that Nia’s transgender identity is part of her origin story and is connected to “why and how she’s inherited these powers.”
She added that Nia’s character as a journalist is important too because “Supergirl” is “hoping to portray the press as heroic.”
Trans actress Nicole Maines, who plays Nia, said: “If I had a trans superhero, someone who looks like me wears a cape (growing up), it would have changed the game. It would have been a whole new level of validation in myself to think that I could to be a superhero!”
She also said there’s been “an outpouring of love and support from fans of the show and from folks who don’t watch the show (and) are so excited to have someone who looks like them, not just on television, but wearing a cape (on TV). It’s so validating and empowering.”
It’s feels really good to see fans have welcomed this transgender character with a lot of enthusiasm.
Season 4 of “Supergirl” is back on the CW since January 20, 2019.
