“Tell It To The Bees”, based on the 2009 Fiona Shaw book of the same name, was created by a 100% female team. Directed by Annabel Jankel, the scenario of this drama was adapted by a married lesbian couple, Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth. Bisexual actress Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger are playing the main characters.
The story takes place in a small Scottish town in 1952 just after the Second World War. Dr. Jean is back in her hometown after the death of her father and takes his doctor’s office. Quickly, she becomes friends with Lydia, the mother of one of her patients.
When Lydia has to move out of her apartment because she cannot afford her rent, Jean welcomes her to her house.
Their mutual attraction turned into a passionate love story, but they have to deal with homophobia. It remains to be seen if their love will survive.
“Tell It To The Bees” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2018.
Critics praised the chemistry between the two actresses. This will be really the positive point of the film. The two actresses were able to beautifully transcribe the attraction and the feelings of the two characters.
As for the end of the film, fans of Fiona Shaw’s book may not fully understand it, because it differs from the novel.
In an interview with Women and Hollywood, director Annabel Jankel explained she wanted the characters “to live and breathe alongside the theatergoers as they made their way home.”
