A Positive First Step For Civil Union Bill In Colorado

Written by

In the state of Colorado, a bill to legalized civil unions was approved by the senate. This is only a first vote, the final vote will take place soon.

The bill SB-172, supported by the Senator Pat Steadman, openly gay, pass a first positive step. It will have however to face the final vote of the Senate before being send in the House where, unfortunately, the majority is Republican. Finally, if the House pass the bill, it would only need the signature of the Governor John Hickenlooper to allow civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.

“I think that it was a historic moment, and I was really proud to be there,” said Senator Lucía Guzmán, a Reverend and out lesbian who co-sponsor the bill. “I’m hoping that the tide of change is with us. It hasn’t come without a lot of pain and a lot of loss, but I’m hoping that the prevailing winds keep moving us forward, because it’s the right thing. It’s about justice and equality.”

It seems the Senate will pass this bill without problems as each of the 20 Democratic senators is co-sponsoring it, giving them a majority in the senate of 35 seats.
