In a statement released early this week, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, said he would like to open the US military to transgender people.

A working group is currently working on the possible opening. A report will be submitted within six months.

«At my direction, the working group will start with the presumption that transgender persons can serve openly without adverse impact on military effectiveness and readiness, unless and except where objective, practical impediments are identified,» Carter said.

According to Human Rights Campaign, there are about 15,500 transgenders soldiers currently serve in the military hiding their true identity.
