Gay Parents Better Than A Single Mom For Americans

Written by

Gay and lesbian parents would be more accepted than a single parent, that's what a new study shows in the United States.

It seems that 1/3 of Americans indicates that they are comfortable with a panel of marital statuses, according to a study by Pew Research Center. This group is called the “acceptors. ”

Another third, called the “skepticals”, mixed views on nontraditional family structures.

Finaly, the last group, the “rejectors,” believe that the nontraditional families can have a negative impact on the society.

Then, the study shows that a majority of acceptors and skepticals think that a family with gay or lesbian parents is more acceptable than an unmarried mother. Even if 98% think that a woman can raise a child alone, 99% of the skepticals and 98% of the rejectors think that it is bad for the society.

Katherine Stamps Mitchell, professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, said to MSNBC that gay and lesbian parents are favoured because they provide a biparentale family, in opposition to a single-parent family. She added that the media helps with the acceptance of the couples and the families of gays and lesbians.

“You’re seeing gay families more and more on TV in shows like Modern Family and in movies like The Kids Are All Right,” she said.
