A Judge In Monroe County, FL Has Repealed The Marriage Equality Ban

Written by

Monroe County

A judge has just over turned the equal marriage ban in Monroe County, Florida!

Judge Luis M. Garcia wrote: "The court is aware that the majority of voters oppose same-sex marriage, but it is our country's proud history to protect the rights of the individual, the rights of the unpopular and rights of the powerless, even at the cost of offending the majority."

In addition, he allowed same-sex couples to be able to immediately access the marriage law since he ordered the county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples from Tuesday. Unfortunately, as reports Tampa Bay, Attorney General Pam Bondi quickly filed a notice of appeal, putting Garcia's ruling on hold and leaving open the possibility that nothing will change next week unless Garcia forces the issue with further action.

Although this order applies only to Monroe County, it is indeed a first victory and an important step towards the repeal of the marriage equality ban in the State of Florida.

Two similar cases are currently awaiting trial in Tallahassee and Miami-Dade.
