Lincoln, Nebraska Will Allow To Partner Of Same-Sex City Employees To Get More Benefits

The Mayor of Lincoln, Nebraska decided that same-sex spouses of city employees will receive the same benefits as others.

Mayor Chris Beutler will thus enable equality of health insurance since the insurance company changed its services to include same-sex couples following the decision of the US Supreme Court to invalidate the portion of the Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

“The city accepted the new definition because it doesn't make sense to deny legally married same-sex couples the same insurance benefits that we grant to other legally married couples,” said Rick Hoppe, Beutler's chief of staff.

However, as reported by the Lincoln Journal Star, Lancaster County officials have refused to extend most pension benefits to to same-sex spouses of county employees because Nebraska still banned marriage equality. Nevertheless, the county will extend federal pension benefits related to hardship withdrawals, minimum required distributions and direct rollovers to same-sex spouses of county employees following the decision of the Supreme Court.
