So who is Leah Vukmir?
Vukmir is an anti-LGBT State Senator. She works a lot with the Wisconsin Family Action, which is a group known for its actions against equality and abortion.
Vukmir has a pretty impressive anti-LGBT record. In 2006, she voted for the constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality. This amendment was approved and prevented same-sex couples from getting married in Wisconsin. A court finally repealed it a few years later.
In 2010, Vukmir ensured that LGBT students were not included in the anti-bullying law.
In 2014, she voted for a resolution that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, Vukmir also refused to co-sponsor pro-LGBT bills, such as the measure banning "ex-gay conversion therapies" for minors, the measure to add gender as a protected class to the state hate crimes law, or the measure allowing same-sex couples to file a joint state tax return.
So we will be following this race in Wisconsin with interest for sure.
“Wisconsin voters will have a stark choice come November – reelect Senator Tammy Baldwin, the first openly LGBTQ U.S. Senator, or elect an extremist anti-LGBTQ politician who prides herself on the divisiveness that makes Congress so unpopular,” Annise Parker, Victory Fund president and CEO, said in a statement.
“Leah Vukmir built her career on opposing basic equality for LGBTQ Americans and considers designated hate groups among her closest supporters. Wisconsin voters have a proud history of electing and reelecting groundbreaking LGBTQ candidates like Senator Baldwin, and we are confident they will reject Vukmir’s hostile agenda come November,” Parker continued.
According to recent polls, Tammy Baldwin is currently leading with 51% of votes against 39% for Leah Vukmir, with 10% undecided.
