New Trial In North Carolina Against The Law Which Allows Officials To Refuse To Issue Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Three couples have filed a lawsuit in North Carolina against the law that allows officials to refuse to perform same-sex marriages by invoking their religion.

The three couples argue that this law is violating the First Amendment and using taxpayer money to advance a religious point of view.

"People are entitled to have their religious beliefs about marriage, but the state can't ... pay for it," attorney Luke Largess said at a press conference.

The law "does not represent the values of inclusion on which North Carolina was built," Chris Sgro, executive director of Equality North Carolina, also said in a news release.

"It targets same-sex couples."
