Ordination Candidacy Of A Lesbian Reinstated

Written by

Mary Ann Kaiser

Mary Ann Kaiser (on the left on the photo) wished to be ordained as deacon in the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference.

Last April, at a meeting of her sector, she had indicated to be in a lesbian relationship. That did not then pose any problem and the sector committee approved her candidature by a 6-2 vote.

But some people being opposed to homosexuality then asked that she be removed from the list of candidates because the United Methodist Book of Discipline prohibits “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” from becoming ordained as ministers in the denomination, as Christian News reports.

After months of battle and much of support in her church, the candidature of Mary Ann was reinstated.
