President Obama nominated Staci Michelle Yandle as Federal Judge for the Southern District of Illinois making her the first African-American lesbian to be nominated for such a position.

If condirmed, she will also become the first openly gay judge in the 7th Circuit (Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin).

According to Politico, increasing diversity on the bench has been a legacy priority for Obama, and one that’s become an emphasis for the White House over the past year under Denis McDonough’s leadership as chief of staff.

Yandle has now to be confirmed at this position.
