Mollie Olgin (pictured on the right), 19, and her girlfriend Mary Christine "Kristene" Chapa, 18, were shot in the head. Molly died but Kristene seems to be in a stable condition in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.
It is extremely probable it is a crime of hatred even if nothing is still proven. Portland Police Chief Randy Wright told msnbc.com that authorities had not yet been able to establish whether the girl’s sexuality "had anything to do with the attack."
"It appears as if this was not just a random attack but that’s something that we really have to develop over time," he added.
Molly and Kristene had been together for 5 months. Olgin's roommate, Samantha Garrett, told kristv.com that the couple had not received any hassle for their relationship and couldn't think of anyone who would hurt them.
Our sincere condolences to Kristene, Molly's family and friends, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Some LGBT activists are calling for nationwide vigils and Molly's family and friends will organize a vigil at the Violet andrews park in Portland, Texas (for more details: Candle lit walk Mollie & Kristene!)
