The Episcopal Church Embraces Marriage Equality While Maintaining Religious Freedom

Even if since 2012 the Episcopal Church decided to bless same-sex couples and recently became one of the three mainline denomination to embrace the equal marriage, after the Presbyterian Church (US) and the United Church of Christ, Right Reverend John C. Bauerschmidt, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee, made the decision not to allow the churches in his jurisdiction to perform same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Of course the churches have the right to refuse this, besides, religious leaders choose whether they wish to or not to perform these ceremonies without penalty, but it is really a pity for those in the community who belong to this church.

The authorization of same-sex marriage ceremonies was adopted by a 184-23 vote by the Episcopal Church USA’s House of Deputies. The modification of the sentence that evoked marriage as a union between a man and a woman and that will become a union between two persons was approved by a vote of 173-27.
