The Reverend Ann Kansfield Became The First Woman And The First Openly Gay Chaplain Of The New York City Fire Department

Reverend Kansfield (pictures on the left) is the eighth chaplain within the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) but both the first woman and the first openly gay person to be sworn.

According to The Associated Press, FDNY chaplains' duties include providing counseling to firefighters and department personnel and performing blessings and invocations. They work part-time.

The FDNY currently has 44 female firefighters.
