The University System Of Georgia Allows Equal Tax Benefits Through Its Retirement Plan

The University System of Georgia has decided to now offer tax benefits to married same-sex couples through a retirement plan.

Despite the ban on marriage equality in the state of Georgia, the Board of Directors approved this system change.

The members of the council said, as the Associated Press reports, that the change was prompted by IRS guidance after the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision striking part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act only allowing marriage between a man and a woman.

For now, only the retirement plan will be possible because of the ban, but a challenge to repeal the ban on equal marriage has been launched.
