Trump administration appoints an anti-trans activist as senior adviser for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

Trump administration has appointed anti-trans activist Bethany Kozma to the Office of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in the US Agency for International Development.

Kozma is well-known for taking positions against transgender people. Under the Obama administration in 2016, she launched a campaign to oppose guidelines for trans students to use facilities that match their identity. This directive was withdrawn by the Trump administration last February.

Why this appointment? USAID has been conducting policies in several countries LGBT economic empowerment, access to housing and healthcare, and political participation.

And now the person who is appointed as the senior adviser is against LGBT rights.

"USAID has not taken any measures regarding the discrimination policy for contractors, as is the case with many other policies. USAID is committed to promoting a work environment that is free from sexual orientation and gender-identity discrimination, in accordance with existing federal law," the agency spokesperson told Buzzfeed.

In spite of this, we can ask ourselves whether this appointment will lead to a change in USAID policy.

In any case, this appointment is extremely worrying for the rights of transgender people in the United States.
