Washington Gay Marriage Is Blocked

Written by

Gay marriage in Washington was blocked from taking effect Wednesday. The opposents gathered sufficient signatures to have a public vote in November.

Earlier this year, the law was passed by the Legislature before to be signed by Governor Chris Gregoire.

Without much surprise, opposents have gathered the number of signatures necessary to obtain a referendum on marriage equality.

"The current definition of marriage works and has worked," said Joseph Backholm, the chair of Preserve Marriage Washington.

According to News Sentinel, a poll by a Seattle consulting firm Strategies 360 showed that 54 percent of voters think it should be legal for same-sex couples to get married, though the poll didn't specifically ask them how they would vote on a referendum.
