Washington To Launch A Lesbian Leadership Council

In Washington, the LGBT Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced at a meeting the creation of a Lesbian Leadership Council to develop the representation and the role of lesbians within the Democratic party.

"No offense to gay men in the room, but just like in the straight community, where women sometimes have been left behind and men have vaulted ahead on the leadership track, my message was it’s time for lesbians to step up," Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in referring to a speech she gave to a lesbian gathering last month.

"And we’re going to make sure we have a vehicle here at the DNC for lesbian leadership…so we can have lesbians catch up and get them the tools they need and make sure they can be a strong part of our leadership team," she said.

DNC LGBT was created now 14 years ago to push LGBT rights. It is not at all a split, it is to increase the representation of the community on a more political level before the 2014 midterm congressional elections and to acquire these rights missing, in particular as regards rights for trans* people.
