Will Minnesota become the 17th American State to ban “conversion therapies”?

Minnesota could become the 17th American State to prohibit “conversion therapies” to minors since the House has just approved the measure.

The legislators approved by a 72-53 vote an amendment that bans “any practice by a mental health practitioner or mental health professional […] that seeks to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.”

This includes “efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same gender.”

The amendment will only apply to minors.

The measure will now be introduced to the Senate, which, unlike the House, is controlled by the Republicans. We’ll see if Minnesota bans “ex-gay therapies”.

So far, 39 bills to prohibit “conversion therapies” have been introduced throughout the United States.
